SOTU

The state of him! I read somewhere that that’s a potent insult in Ireland, to huff and shake your head at someone who is a mess, literally or figuratively, and exclaim “The state of him!”

Yeah, you know who I’m talking about, even though I’m not going to mention his name. Considering it my civic duty, I was going to watch at least a good part of the State of the Union address last night, but I had to walk away. I don’t like seeing him or hearing his voice; and between the smirking faces of the Speaker and the Vice President and the Krusty Kabinet Krew and the whole Republican side of the House chamber leaping to its feet to hoot and holler like jackasses at every stupid lie, I was finished after only ten minutes. I’ll read the transcript.

He won’t live forever, but I can’t be sure that the end of the Trump crime spree will be the end of MAGA and Trumpism. The Republican Senators and Representatives and the KKK all seemed pretty pleased with themselves and not at all ashamed of their role in enabling this vile man and his cruelty and corruption, and that just makes me think that we’ll see more of the same in another Republican administration. They’re proud of how evil they are.

They’re also so far beyond “saying the quiet part out loud.” Representative Al Green got kicked out of the House chamber for holding up a sign that read “Black people are not apes!” What was inappropriate about that sign? Why was Representative Troy Nehls so offended by that sign that he tried to tear it out of Green’s hands? Those are rhetorical questions whose answers I already know. White supremacy is no longer a subtext for MAGA. It’s the whole book.

I never did read the transcript, and I never will. I read and heard enough post-speech coverage to get the gist.

The state of this country! The state of it!
